William Wirt (November 8, 1772 – February 18, 1834) was an American author and statesman who is credited with turning the position of United States Attorney General into one of influence. He was the longest serving Attorney General in U.S. history. He was also the Anti-Masonic nominee for president in the 1832 election. The Susquehanna Bridge Company was incorporated in Maryland on Dec. 24, 1812 to build a toll bridge across the Susquehanna River between Port Deposit and Rock Run. A supplement of Jan. 19, 1815, allowed the company to increase its capital by $500,000 and granted it banking powers, changing the name to the Susuquehanna Bridge and Bank Company.
